Do you want to eat delicious, nutritious fish, but lack confidence about how sustainable the fishery is, what species you are actually being served, or how the laborers who caught it are treated?
Great questions. Unfortunately, responsibly choosing delicious fish is very hard given the challenges facing today's fisheries.
The UN Food and Agriculture Organization's 2016 report on global aquaculture and fisheries (Figure 13, pg. 39) shared that 89.5 percent of global fisheries are either fully-exploited or over-exploited. The New York Times reported on slave labor in some of the world's prime fisheries. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's FishWatch.org discusses multiple studies that report seafood fraud is commonplace in the US. (Please see the research citations 1,2,3, below.)
Sustainably farmed, fully-sourceable fish can address these questions, but farming has to be done responsibly. Some types of aquaculture in ocean pens can harm the environment through pollution, escape, or disease transfer, and fish are exposed to whatever pollution may be in the natural area in which it lives.
